Welcome to our pursuit of hygge
Hi friends! We’re Maria & Marissa, two self-proclaimed cousins, and for as long as we can remember, we’ve been in pursuit of hygge.
It’s a word we’ve found many aren’t too familiar with:
hyg·ge
/ˈh(y)o͞oɡə,ˈho͝oɡə/ (pronounced hoo-gah)
noun
a Danish word for a quality of cosiness (= feeling warm, comfortable, and safe) that comes from doing simple things such as lighting candles, baking, or spending time at home with your family.
Ahh, just reading the definition gives us the warm fuzzies. After countless Saturdays spent growing up together at Maria’s grandparent’s house for pizza night, our roots of hygge were born out of a love of good food and good company. And while we’re just as into dreamy candles and comfy throws as the next person (and you’ll find plenty of that here), hygge for us is more than cozy home goods.
Whether we’re drinking our morning cup of coffee from our favorite mug, gathered around the kitchen table with friends taking our next turn in Taboo, or sliding on a pair of cozy socks as we get ready to settle in and watch a new Netflix series, hygge is right there with us.
In getting to know hygge, we’ve also learned to recognize its arguably more important counter-part: gratitude. The magic of hygge that comes with burning a candle, surrounding yourself with good company, or snuggling up after a long day can all be missed if we don’t take a moment to appreciate it.
Be it over coffee, Instagram, Pinterest, or novels via text message, we have shared endless inspiration with each other on new things that light us up - and old things that we almost forgot make all the difference. And now, we want to do that with you.
On Made in Hygge we’re sharing ways in which we create that same cozy pizza night feeling of hygge for ourselves everyday (on both good and bad) through adventures, clothing, recipes & gatherings, coffee mugs, and more. In sharing our journey we hope to inspire you to find what brings you hygge, and to take time for it.
